PUSH / PULL

2021 - 2023

Medium:Custom CSS, Javascript, Squarespace CMS
Role: Web Developer & Graphic Designer
As the Digital Media Manager at Culture Push since 2020, I have spearheaded web-based production for various projects, events, and exhibitions. This portfolio showcases my work in publication design and web development for Issues 18 and 19 of Culture Push's multimedia online publication, PUSH/PULL.

PUSH/PULL presents diverse perspectives on civic engagement, social practice, and contemporary issues. It situates Culture Push Fellows and Artists within critical discourse and facilitates dialogue between creators, the Culture Push community, and global audiences.

Contributions & Technologies:
  • Developed and implemented innovative web design and publication layouts
  • Used JavaScript and custom CSS for interactive design elements in Issue 18
  • Employed custom CSS for creative typography and layout design in Issue 19
  • Blended multimedia elements to create cohesive and engaging online experiences

These issues mark a pivotal transformation in our design approach, integrating the dynamic storytelling technique known as scrollytelling.

Scrollytelling is an innovative web design technique that merges narrative with scroll-triggered animations and interactions. This method creates an engaging and seamless user experience, where the story unfolds as the reader scrolls through the content. It's particularly effective for multimedia storytelling, allowing the integration of text, images, and video in a fluid, interactive format.

ISSUE 18 - Spring 2023
A Guide to Building a Hyper Local History: History-Making, Knowledge Sharing & Creative Storytelling : edited by Khadijah McCaskill

Challenge: The challenge lay in presenting content from a single author that reflected a collaborative process with the Brownsville community. The goal was to maintain a seamless narrative flow, avoiding the traditional chapter segmentation that could disrupt the story's continuity. The content was multimedia-rich, demanding a design akin to a collage to echo the contributions of younger artists involved.

Solution: Utilizing scrollytelling, I developed a singular, interactive webpage that brought the content to life. This approach allowed for a seamless narrative experience while infusing elements of surprise and discovery. The design was built using JavaScript and custom CSS, creating unique interactions that enriched the user's journey through the issue.

ISSUE 19 - Fall 2023
Heirlooms : edited by Dena Igusti

Challenge: This issue predominantly comprised concise, powerful text-based content interspersed with purely image-based chapters. The design needed to respect the content's inherent separation while maintaining a cohesive and dynamic overall feel.

Solution: The focus shifted to typography as the primary design element to ensure the issue's dynamism and discovery aspect. I employed custom CSS to craft a visually coherent yet distinct layout for each chapter, balancing the text and image-based content seamlessly.
